Bientôt le renouveau / New things pretty soon - 3/3

Septembre / September

 C'est la rentrée

et il y a quelques nouveautés pour moi. Tout d'abord, je n'arrive plus à corriger mes copies qui sont toutes floues donc j'ai des lunettes (et il en faut du temps pour avoir un rendez-vous chez l'ophtalmo !)

It's back to school and there are some news about me. First of all I can't correct my papers anymore, they are all blurry so I have to wear glasses (and man did it take some time to get an appointment at the ophtalmologist's !)

Et cette photo (je devrais dire : ce selfie) a été pris à l'aide de mon portable. Oui, mesdames et messieurs, après une résistance acharnée j'ai finalement cédé. J'ai eu du mal au début, pour moi cet appareil c'est plus ou moins le loup dans la bergerie. J'ai pris un petit modèle reconditionné qui me sert à texter, mais j'apprécie beaucoup la fonction minuterie et les jeux du type "4 images et 1 mot". Je ne le consulte pas toutes les deux minutes comme mes élèves et il n'a pas droit de cité dans ma chambre à coucher. On n'a pas la wifi à la maison donc un soir on est allés au restaurant "Week-end" à Saint-Louis pour en profiter - et manger un bon petit quelque chose au passage.

And this picture, or should I say this selfie, was taken with my cell phone. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, after battling for years, I finally gave in. I was very uncomfortable with it at first because for me that device is more or less evil. I bought a simple, small and reconditioned phone that I mainly use to text and I must say I really like the timer and games like "4 pictures 1 word". I don't look at it every other minute like my students and it is absolutely not welcome in the bedroom. We don't have wifi at home so one evening we went to the "Week-end" restaurant that has free wifi - and we ate a good little something while we were there

C'est la période où divers magazines nous envoient des mini-exemplaires gratuits et j'ai gardé cet article, je pensais en parler en classe - avec le recul, mon Dieu quelle cruelle ironie...

 

It's the time of the year when various magazines send us free copies and I kept this article that I wanted to deal with in class - in hindsight, oh my God what cruel irony...

 

Octobre / October

Un petit voyage pour se changer les idées - le temps n'est pas encore trop froid et j'avais promis à Bettina, une ancienne correspondante venue à Bâle, que l'on se verrait à Vienne où elle habite et que je l'inviterais (elle m'a dépanné car j'étais presque sans le sou après un problème de carte bancaire)

 

A little trip for a change of scenery - the weather is not quite cold yet and I had promised Bettina, a former penpal who came to Basel, that we would meet in Vienna where she lives and I would invite her (she helped me out because I was almost pennyless after a credit card problem)

Qui dit Vienne dit chocolat chaud bien sûr ! Toujours servi avec un petit verre d'eau / You hear Vienna you think hot chocolate of course ! Always with a little glass of water on the side

Et Vienne, ce sont aussi les valses et la musique. Il y a des concerts dans l'orangerie à Schönbrunn, le soir, et j'étais la seule intéressée. J'y suis allée seule, mais je ne l'ai pas regretté une seule minute. C'était comme un mini-concert de Nouvel An qu'on voit à la télé (d'ailleurs c'est demain !) - c'était MAGIQUE !!!

Et j'ai fait la connaissance d'un couple d'Irlandais très sympathiques, et discuté avec des gens de partout dans le monde.

 

And Vienna is also about the waltzes and the music. There are summer concerts in the Orangerie in Schönbrunn, in the evening, and nobody wanted to go with me. I went alone and didn't regret it for one minute. It was like a mini-New-Year's concert that you watch on TV (and it's tomorrow !) - it was truly MAGICAL !!!

And I got to meet a really nice Irish couple, and talk with people from all over the world. 

 

Novembre / November

La vie suit son cours. Les jours diminuent. On se traîne jusqu'à la promesse de Noël, des vacances, des lumières et des matins où l'on peut dormir plus longtemps. 

 

Life goes on as usual. The days get shorter. We drag ourselves to the promise of Christmas, the holidays, the lights and the mornings when you can sleep a little longer.

 

Nous y pensions depuis longtemps et là le moment était venu : nous avons adopté des chats d'un refuge à Saint-Louis (sous le coup d'une expulsion par la mairie, donc nous avons pensé que c'était doublement le bon moment)

 

We had been thinking about it for quite a while, and then the time had come : we adopted cats from a shelter in Saint-Louis (that was under an expulsion decision from the mayor, at the end of December, so we thought it was all the more the right moment)

Décembre / December

Et finalement, c'est Noël  -  And finally it's Christmas

Oui, le sapin est petit et il y a peu de bougies et de décorations... c'est qu'on a déjà retrouvé Saya dans le sapin et les boules sont des jouets formidables, donc on s'est adaptés. Je me demande comment ça se passera avec mes étagères de semis au printemps...

 

Yes, the tree is a small one and we don't have many candles or ornaments... we had already found Saya in the tree and the baubles are fantastic toys, so we adjusted it to the situation. I wonder how it is going to go with my shelves of seedlings in the spring...

 

Nous vous souhaitons à tous une très bonne année. Je ne sais pas quoi penser, avec la tournure que prend le monde en ce moment (attentats, Trump, la Syrie, les réfugiés, les élections en France...) mais j'espère que tout ira pour le mieux.

 

We wish you all a very good year. I really don't know what to think, with what the world is getting to at the moment (terrorist attacks, Trump, Syria, the refugee crisis, the upcoming election in France...) but I do hope for the best.
