Quoi de neuf au jardin ? What's new in the garden ?

Well, I can answer with satisfaction that everything is fine !!! We had a few deaths to deplore the past winter (or rather in spring, I thought that it was during the winter because they were evergreen potted shrubs ; but as I watched the pictures from April, the other day, I saw them green and healthy !! which means that they died for lack of care from Jean while I was away in Slovakia !!!) I stopped compulsively buying a lot of plants and I always wonder first where they will go - if I can't answer, I don't buy them !

I sowed a lot of seeds this year. I first want to take good care of the structure of the garden and improve the soil, to bring in plants that will find there good conditions to grow and blossom. So we weeded a lot and I thoroughly planned the layout of the garden. I transplanted a lot of things that had been bought and planted mindlessly... and I want to plan ahead in the very long run for the rest.
We made some new lawn borders and weeded all that place that started to look like a jungle. Now each plant really stands out. Before, all we could see was just the weeds.
I had always thought that we would gravel the paths... in fact we let the grass grow back and we just mow it. It's much prettier, it looks like a nice green carpet. And when the edges are nicely trimmed as well, it's even better !
My Castor rosebush, just below the terrace, bordered by hebes and lavenders. It was a bit sad looking, so I cut all the dead flowers, and now it thanks me with abundant new blossoms. It is really an easy-to-live rosebush, not grudge-bearing at all : I haven't watered it a single time this year, not even a lot after planting it - well I mulched. It's not at all mad at me and covers the ground in the most elegant manner !
Honorine Jobert, not grudge-bearing either. It is visibly not in the best of places : too much in the shadow, in a hard and poor soil, that wasn't enriched last fall. Just a little compost when I remembered (not often !)... well, it blooms anyway. Thank you very much ! I'll make up for it this fall, and in the spring she'll find a new place where the grass is greener.
And to finish, a survivor that can get a lot of credit !!! I had sowed impatiens before leaving for Slovakia, and I never really cared for them (too much to catch up on when I came back).
5 of them survived the draught of the sowing box, were planted out in small pots then forgotten again in the garden - when I passed by they sometimes got a drop of water... planted in the flowerbed very quickly before leaving for the South of France (beginning of July !!), and this one is the only one left. It started blooming two weeks ago, so I try to give it water and food regularly, and I will try not to let it frost, bring it in and propagate it !

Well, I must now go and get my lessons ready for tomorrow - that's my top priority. After that I still have some little things to paint - if I have time left. Next week there should be the Sainte Marie aux Mines quilt exhibition, so it's better if I prepare the two weeks of class ahead. Fortunately the girls are now older and more independant, they can manage on their own for some things. They are over at some of their friends' house and they are playing there.

Patty a dit…

the garden looks wonderful ! I would gladly send you some of our rain as in the past 48 hours we have had more than 6 inches.
