En 2005, nous avons emménagé à la fin du mois de février, et nous avions bien pataugé dans la neige avec nos cartons. Quand Jean a fait le plein avant de rendre la camionnette de location, il n'arrivait pas à ouvrir la trappe à essence car elle était gelée...La semaine précédente, nous avions presque tous (Laure, bébé, y avait échappé, et Elise aussi je crois, mais je ne m'en souviens plus bien) eu une gastro entérite bien carabinée qui nous avait laissé un peu sur le carreau. Le genre de choses dont on se souvient !
De chaque côté du garage, il y avait de la terre, et quand il pleuvait tout s'écroulait. Nous n'avions plus un radis car le budget "extérieur" avait été englouti suite à la découverte de la nature du terrain qui exige la pose d'un radier sous les fondations (et ça a douillé...)
In 2005, we moved into our house at the end of February, and we waded in snow as we carried our boxes. When Jean was to fill up the tank before giving back the rental truck, the trapdoor was frozen and he couldn't open it... the previous week we had almost all been hit by a very nasty stomach bug (except for Laure who was a baby, and maybe Elise too, but I can't remember for sure) that had taken its token on our strength. The kind of things that make memories !
On each side of the garage doors, there were huge heaps of earth that had been dug and pushed back, and everytime it rained it toppled down. We didn't have a penny left because the budget for landscaping and yardwork had been swallowed by an unexpected apron we had to build under the foundations, due to the nature of the ground (it cost us more than an arm and a leg...)
Donc nous avons décidé de nous débrouiller nous-mêmes - on s'est dit que ça ne doit pas être bien difficile d'acheter des plantes et de les mettre en terre, surtout qu'un voisin avait tout fait faire par un paysagiste, et en a eu pour 10 000 euros (juste le gazon, et planter des thuyas, plus un petit aménagement devant la maison). Hors de question !
La priorité était de faire un mur des deux côtés du garage. On allait faire des promenades, on regardait ce que les autres propriétaires avaient fait, on prenait des catalogues de magasins de matériaux et bricolages, on demandait des conseils aux voisins. On s'est décidés pour un format de bacs carrés et bien grands, on a pris des mesures, on s'est renseignés sur la mise en oeuvre (merci internet, on a trouvé plein de choses à savoir) et c'était parti.
So we decided to resort to good old DIY - we figured it shouldn't be too difficult to buy plants and put them in the ground - all the more after hearing about a neighbour who had it done by a professional, and it cost him 10 000 euros just for the lawn, planting some thujas and a little landscaping in front of the house). Out of the question for us !
Our priority was to erect a wall on both sides of the garage. We went on walks and looked at houses, kept up with what other neighbours were doing, we would take lots of catalogs from construction materials stores and generally asked for other people's opinions. We set our choice on square shaped concrete elements, took some measures, did some research about the things to know before starting building (and we found lots of valuable information on the net), and we were ready to start.

Je m'amusais à remplir les bacs avec des pensées, j'allais dans toutes les pépinières et jardineries aux alentours et je jouais avec toutes sortes de graines (les faciles à réussir). Je plantais dans la glaise sans amendements, j'ai découvert qu'on avait plein de limaces et un sol super-lourd ! Mais c'était le temps de l'insouciance et des découvertes. Mon adolescence jardinière si l'on veut.
I had fun filling the squares with violas, I went to every nursery and garden center in sight and I played and experimented with all sorts of seeds (the easy ones). I planted in the clay without enriching the soil, I found out that we have lots of slugs and very heavy soil ! But it was a fun time, of carelessness and discoveries. Like the adolescence of my gardening years.

On a vécu pendant longtemps avec ce tas de terre, et sur cette photo il a quand même sacrément diminué. Tout ceux qui avaient besoin de terre venaient se servir, pareil pour les cailloux, et les filles s'en servaient même parfois comme toboggan.
We lived with this huge pile of earth for a long time, and in the picture, it had already been hugely depleted. Anyone who needed some dirt came to get some, same for the rocks, and the girls even used it as a slide.

Je ne savais pas que le gaura était vivace, je l'ai benné à la fin de la saison ! Dommage.
Cette année-là, l'automne avait été particulièrement doux. Jean et moi sommes allés dans une chambre d'hôtes à la Toussaint, dans le Morvan, et nous en avons profité pour faire un tour chez Thierry Denis.
Il faisait tellement doux le soir que nous mangions encore sur la terrasse.
I didn't know the bee blossom was a perennial, I dug it up and threw it out at the end of the season, what a pity.
That year, the fall had been particularly pleasant and cool. Jean and I took a trip to the Morvan and stayed in a lovely guestroom and while we were there we went to buy some plants from Thierry Denis.
The weather was so mild that in the evenings we could still have dinner outside on the terrace.

A cette époque j'avais acheté mon broyeur et je récupérais toutes sortes de branches chez les voisins pour en faire du paillis. Parfois ça restait devant chez nous un certain temps. Mais ça a bien amélioré la terre là où on en a mis.
Around that period I had bought my chopper (grinder ? chipper ?) and took all sorts of branches from the neighbours to make mulch. Sometimes it stayed in the garage way for quite a bit of time. But it really did a good job on improving the soil where we used it.

Deux ans plus tard, la haie de teucrium a bien poussé, les hélianthémums ont bien occupé l'espace, la calamintha népéta est trop imposante pour le premier plan, les oreilles d'ours débordent de partout et l'ensemble devient vite brouillon. Je ne suis pas satisfaite. Les népétas rejoindront le bord de route et seront placées devant le rosier Prairie Dawn.
Two years later, the germander hedge has grown, the helianthemum have spread very well, the savory calamint has become too overwhelming for the foreground, the lamb's ear starts getting invasive and the whole impression gets muddled. I am not happy with it. The calamint will be transplanted along the road, and will serve as a border for the rosebush Prairie Dawn.

Les hélianthémums, alchemilles saxatilis et rhazia orientalis de chez Thierry Denis sont toujours là, il n'y a que le miscanthus nain qui n'a rien donné, et qui est allé rejoindre une nouvelles famille en Slovaquie.
Et en plus, il y a les pavés !
The helianthemums, dwarf lady's mantle and eastern blue stars from Thierry Denis are still here, there is only a dwarf chinese silvergrass that didn't come to much and that went to another family in Slovakia.
And what's more, the front is now paved !  |

La barrière en bois du côté droit, virée, j'ai tout égalisé et j'ai à présent un grand espace où je vais déplacer le rosier Castor qui est sur la butte. Je sens que ça va être toute une affaire, mais il sera bien mieux mis en valeur ici.
Last fall, big overhaul . I uprooted a lot of things, a white Jupiter's beard that reseeded everywhere, some daisies that had smothered other seeds I had tried to sow and add in there the buttercups that started to invade the space, it wasn't right anymore.
The little wooden fence on the right side, out it went, I leveled up everything and now I have a nice big space to where I will move the Castor rosebush that is now on the mound. I think it will be a big deal, but it will be much more to its advantage on display here.

J'ai laissé un hélianthemum, quelques rhazias, les alchémilles (encore pleines de boutons d'or, il faut que je m'en occupe). Des arbustes mal placés à d'autres endroits viendront cacher le coin où il y a la gouttière.
I left one helianthemum, some eastern bluestars, the lady's mantles (but they're still full of buttercups, I have to do something about this). Some misplaced shrubs will leave their spot and come to hide the corner with the gutter pipe.
C'était la première partie, il y an a encore une qui est celle de l'entrée. Mais ce sera pour une prochaine fois !
So this was only the first part, there is one other that is next to the entry way. But I will keep it for some other time !

En effet, une belle évolution dans ton jardin malgré les aléas rencontrés et imprévisibles. Les échecs en jardinage ont quelques choses de bon, ils servent à progresser et dès ce printemps, j'imagine que ton jardin va prendre de l'ampleur.
