When Jean told us that he would take part in the French veteran table tennis championship that would take place in Saint Dié, we immediately thought of making it a little family vacation to show the girls where their mom used to live before getting married. It was the city of my first transfer after being given tenure. I was really relieved to have avoided the Parisian suburbs, dubious or too distant cities. Every newly appointed teacher's nightmare is to end up in Créteil in a ZEP (priority education zone : think Michelle Pfeiffer in Dangerous Minds) and stay there for 5 years or more until they get enough points to leave where the grass is greener.

Much to my surprise, I ended up in a ZEP (but it was a softer version) in the Vautrin Lud school - when I saw the real thing in Mulhouse, in the Bourtzwiller middle school I realised very quickly that it was a totally different world - and it was hard, sometimes (as a beginner, there are lots of things I would do much differently now), but still I have nice memories from my year there.

We had a room here and each day we picked up Jean at the sport hall. The first day he told us "I'll be done at 5". As we came into the hall we gasped... it was like a super huge hive with players and tables everywhere and the bleachers (terraces) packed with people chatting or cheering... And the heat, oh the heat (stale atmosphere and lots of sweating sportsmen and women). So we played our own little game called "Mom buys something to the first one to spot Jean" (I won !) ; and in fact he had one more match at 7.30. And it was like that everyday.

Vue du premier niveau / the view from the first level
le parc, joli mais ça manque de fleurs / the park, nice but where are the flowers ?
la fontaine en redescendant / the fountain, back on the ground

While leaving the park we saw this door (I forgot the Japanese name !) and not far from it there was a cute little garden, Japanese style.

We would have liked to take a walk in the forest where we used to go and hike, a place that was called the 3 chairs or the 3 fir trees, something like that, but we didn't really recall how to get there and we didn't have the time anyway, with all the unexpected coming and going between the sport hall and the farmhouse inn. So as I'm always the first to get up, I went for a little walk by myself at the break of dawn.

I love the forest there, it is very much like where my parents live : sandstone, the smell of pines, red sand... I sat on a stump for a long while, listening to the birds and I heard the cuckoo, woodpeckers, and numerous others - I saw a great spotted woodpecker, prey birds... I was surrounded by silence and nature, the air was pure... a much needed break !

As we were really close, I insisted on going to the Garden of Berchigranges, much to my daughters's delight. (I am being ironic - "another garden ? why do we always only visit gardens ?") They moaned a little, but loved it anyway. It will be my next post.

Gros bisous :-*
