Le voyage en Angleterre - Fin / The trip to England - the end : Stratford-upon-Avon

So this is the last day of our adventures. In the morning everybody met at the central parking, with a heart feeling a little heavy, some families and some students got along very well and were really happy about their stay.
As for us, we were delighted, and we will remember the exquisite meals - every evening we came home to delicious smells coming out of the kitchen, and we AAAAHHHH-ed as the dishes were put on the table.
There was always an assortment of crudités as a starter,  a main dish and fruit for dessert, except the last evening when we had apple crumble and custard. Among others we had chicken tikka masala, or cottage pie... and it looks like at the beginning, our hosts were a little on their guards and we learned that their previous guests were very picky and hadn't liked, even criticized their cooking. Well, from someone who has very high expectations about cooking (Jean always tells me I would be a marvellous nitpicker in a cooking show like Come dine with Me), these people were utter imbeciles - to put it politely - and surely fell victim to the stereotypes about British cooking. We enjoyed every bit of it, everything was tasty, there was no weird associations or any meal that would be mistaken for dessert (like in Louis de Funès's film ! - ask me if you would like a translation) ... everybody had second helpings.

Well we went back to Dover and stopped in Stratford-upon-Avon on the way, for lots of visits about Shakespeare - but in the end some of them visited for two minutes and then crashed on banks, or in parks, or on benches. And what were they waiting for ? Free time and shopping ! Well, they were in for a treat, the bus had to be on standstill for 9 hours.

So we went for lunch, outside in the sun
Délicieux ! Delicious !
We went to buy various things (DVDs, magazines, orange marmelade...)

I found a DVD set with all of Black Adder's episodes - even Elise loves it, she's become a fan ! And a DVD about Gordon Ramsay in India (I didn't know this guy until now). It's fascinating and very informative.
And then we headed home... We reached Dover in the night, we could only embark at 2 o'clock, then by the time we reached France, with the time difference, it was 5 in the morning... and with a stop every 2 hours it meant very, very, very little sleep.
But on the boat it was really surreal. Buses full of British students, carrying loads and loads and loads of beer. Singing, drinking, being loud... a couple of elderly people were watching them disapprovingly and we heard them say "Makes us ashamed of being British". It reminded me of our lesson about stereotypes  - there is one that says that the British are not very sober and still have progress to make concerning alcohol consumption. Well, this one, even seen from very far, that night, you couldn't say that it's a legend.

A refaire !
It took me a whole week to get over the lack of sleep ! But I remember the good atmosphere with the colleagues, the time we had the giggles and couldn't stop, and the pupils who were still punctual and nice. I should do this again !

What a great trip you had. I'm glad you mentioned that you enjoyed the food because I've always wondered about it - one hears so much about "bad" English cooking.
Our daughter and son-in-law felt that of all the countries they visited during their 9 months in Europe, Britain had the roughest manners. Not everyone, but the drinking culture was very prominent. So sad.

I hope you are enjoying summer days!

Oh yes, I forgot to mention: 'Know how much to drink, and when to stop' on the list of French talents! In fact, it's a talent I inherited from my Welsh mum, so I don't feel out of place here in France. I'm really flattered that you might use my list - please do. I imagine that it would create a lot of discussion...
